Jeff Garretson, MA, LCPC

Hi, I’m Jeff. I know that starting therapy can often be a hard step to take, and the fact that you are on this website right now, considering diving in to some personal work, is no small feat. If you’d like to continue the momentum that you started today by working with me, I would be honored, and I’d like to let you know a little bit more about me and the way that I work with clients.

I earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adams State University in Colorado in 2023, and I have worked in a variety of mental health settings from direct care, to community mental health, and now private practice. Prior to entering the mental health field, I worked as a Spanish teacher in Philadelphia, and as a backpacking and rafting guide in and around Glacier National Park. The natural world continues to inspire and influence the way I engage with my surroundings and the way that I help my clients.

I approach each and every client from a humanistic lens, which means that I honor your expertise on who you are and the good reasons that you have to feel and think the way you do. At the same time, I can offer you a fresh perspective and help you to see blind spots or cognitive distortions that may be getting in your way, so that you are able to see things more clearly and live your life the way that aligns with your values. From there, I draw upon several different modalities. Internal Family Systems (IFS), helps you to identify “parts” of yourself who are either carrying unhealed pain, or trying to protect you from pain, and inadvertently causing problems for you. The goal is to integrate all of your parts to develop a solid sense of self. Somatic Experiencing utilizes Polyvagal Theory in order to treat trauma and give you the skills to regulate your nervous system. This modality contrasts from traditional talk therapy in that there is more of an emphasis on bringing awareness to your body, and sessions are often quiet and inwardly focused. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), is a skills-based approach that can improve emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

In couples work, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in order to help you and your partner to recognize how your negative cycle gets in the way of connection and how you can slowly lean in to vulnerability to put down your protections and open yourself up to a deeper emotional bond.
